Texas Democrats: King Street Patriots to turn over financial records

Democrats to look at records Tuesday at noon; court hearing scheduled Thursday just in case

Houston tea party spinoff King Street Patriots will grant the Texas Democratic Party access to its financial records, forestalling an injunction hearing that had been set for Monday afternoon in Austin, according to TDP.

According to a TDP news release, review of the records will occur Tuesday at noon, with a hearing scheduled for Thursday in case TDP General Counsel Chad Dunn still has questions about what KSP has or has not disclosed.

TDP’s original information request was sent last Wednesday and demanded that KSP — as a registered Texas nonprofit corporation — turn over required records last Friday or today. On Friday, TDP announced it had scheduled the injunction hearing due to a lack of response from KSP, as the Texas Independent previously reported.

In a statement on its website, KSP defends itself and its KSP/True the Vote program against Democratic allegations and denies any connection to reports of voter intimidation by poll watchers.

Here is the text of the TDP announcement:

Texas Democratic Party General Counsel Chad Dunn announced today that the TDP has succeeded in obtaining access to the King Street Patriots’ financial records. Review of the records will take place Tuesday at noon. A hearing will take place Thursday, if necessary, to determine if King Street has made the appropriate disclosures.

“As this case continues, we are confident we will obtain access to King Street’s records that show who is funding their efforts and what correspondence they’ve had with Republican political groups,” said Dunn. “The Texas Democratic Party is determined to move forward with our effort to make sure King Street and all those who acted in concert with them, including Republican candidates, oppressive “poll watchers,” and all their donors are held responsible for their actions.”
